So here we go.

The first batch of games in the GregHorrorShow’s Top 100 Games list!

A quick recap on how I decided who came where:

I decided, as so many games mean so many different things to me, I should come up with a fair way to judge them. This is what I came up with:

A few provisos before we hit the first ten games…

Firstly this is my list of my Top 100 games. I certainly don’t expect you guys to agree with it (though hopefully you’ll agree with some of the choices 😆 ) and would welcome any comments.

Secondly, I’m not planning on putting the scores or totals up, just listing the games in the order they came out in.

Lastly, I never owned a Nintendo or Microsoft console so my experiences on these games were limited to friend’s houses etc – bite me 🙂

100. GHOSTBUSTERS (ZX Spectrum)

Ghostbusters 

I spent so many hours playing this as a kid and never even made it past the first bit but I was crazy for anything Ghostbusters so I loved it as much as any game I had at the time. You used to have work your way around the city busting ghosts. Inbetween busts you got to drive the Ecto 1 and buy loads of cool gadgets that didn’t really do much. Looking back its pretty appalling 😆 but I have very happy memories of it. Damn that Marshmallow Man coming to stomp all over the town so quickly!

 

99. SPLATTERHOUSE 2 (Sega Mega Drive)

Splatterhouse 2 

Rick was hard as nails. After seeing his girlfriend Jennifer killed at the end of the original Splatterhouse does he sit around and mope, crying like a baby? No siree, he gets himself the Hell Mask and goes to rescue her from the Land Of The Dead. 😎 My friends and I didn’t really get that far into Splatterhouse 2 as it was hardcore. We never got bored though, not with the ability to ‘splat’ undead enemies onto the wall in the background with a metal pipe. 🙂 Nightmarish? Yes. Fun? Hell Yeah!!!

 

98. GHOULS N GHOSTS (Sega Master System)

Ghouls N Ghosts 

If you wanna talk near impossible games let me introduce you to Ghouls N Ghosts. Damn this game was hard. I dread to think how many hours I put into this just to be able to get to the second or third level – sheesh. You control Arthur the Knight, who is trying to save his true love and help restore the souls to the people the evil God Loki has taken them from. But let’s be honest we all laughed the first time he got hit, lost his armour and was just in his heart covered boxer shorts 😆 Then we wept as his died from the next hit. 😦 Three hits and you’re dead – as Pulp once sang: This Is Hardcore.

 

97. LETHAL ENFORCERS (Sega Mega Drive)

Ah Lethal Enforcers, such fun 🙂 Having experienced it in the arcades it didn’t take much for me to invest in a copy for the Mega Drive. From then on it was a downward slope as me, my Dad and my brother desperately tried to shoot out some Chinamen in a Chinese Laundry or take out some bad guys in a bank robbery. To reload you had to aim the gun away from the screen and we soon perfected what can only be described as the campest reloading ever – a quick flick of the wrist away to reload and back firing in one fluid motion. Good wholesome shooting family fun – just don’t shoot the civilians!!

 

96. GOLDEN AXE (Sega Master System)

Golden Axe

Golden Axe was brilliant – first up the choice of characters: Barbarian, Amazon or Dwarf (Dwarf ftw :cool:). You got swords/axes, magic – which was sweet and even the ability to ride monsters, spewing fire/ice at baddies. This is an absolute classic. In fact at a theme park once my parents had to announce over the tannoy for me to come to the main gate. The park was closing but I’d gone back to the arcade for one last game. 😳 I had it for the Master System and while the graphics weren’t as good as the arcade the gameplay was just as good.

 

95. HARD DRIVIN’ (Sega Mega Drive)

I wasted many an hour on Hard Drivin’ pretending I was really driving and creating the most awesome crash replays by screaming up the loop the loop and veering off the side on the way up. Basically you had a choice of the stunt course or the speed course. Mainly most people went stunt – and why not, the speed course was rubbish anyway 😆 Used to get endless amusement from the fact that if you hit the cow it mooed. I used to love Hard Drivin’ but can admit it doesn’t really hold up against some of the driving games that have followed it. 🙂

 

94. WWF WRESTLEFEST ROYAL RUMBLE (Arcade)

My brother and I must’ve pumped hundreds of quid into this over the years. WWF was ‘real’ wrestling and Hulk Hogan ruled. 😎 This was as close as we got to the real thing. We’d be like ‘oh my God look at the graphics – it’s so realistic.’ 😆 The good thing about this was the Royal Rumble mode. Yeah tag team was all well and good but there’s nothing quite like ‘every man for himself’ to get the fingers and thumbs pumping. Happy times and the recent WWE Legends Of Wrestlemania was a great example of how wrestling games used to be – fun.

 

93. CHASE HQ (Sega Master System)

Chase HQ

Chase HQ made you feel like the coolest cop EVER. You had a Porsche. You had nitro boosts. When you saw your suspect you put a red police light on the top of your car. And when you finally caught up with them you had to ram them off the road Gene Hunt style. Would love to see this remade and updated at some stage. The gameplay was great, if a little short but the games combination of different styles (tactical boosting / agressive ramming) broke things up and it was just as entertaining to watch as it was play.

 

92. SINGSTAR (Playstation 3) 

Singstar

The only singing game you’ll ever need and I’m not just saying that because I’ve worked on every edition 😆 Singstar was a truly ground breaking title in the genre. No one had used original audio for a singing game before and to feature the video in the background as well was a touch of genius. I have had many a great night when the Singstar has come out to play 🙂

 

91. RESISTANCE 2 (Playstation 3)

Resistance 2

Resistance 2 follows on from the first game – beginning minutes after Resistance: Fall Of Man concludes. The second game was bigger and better than the first but despite it’s increase in scale it was less fun in places and didn’t have as many new inventive weapons. Graphically it was a step up and some of the boss battles were epic – a very solid shooter and one that continues to expand the Resistance universe.

PES Through The Years…

Wow, that was certainly a trip down memory lane.

Just on my way home from the Konami 40th Birthday Celebration at Centre Point in London.

The evening focused on Pro Evolution Soccer and how the game has developed and improved since the early days of PES (back on the SNES).

They had various iterations of the game on different consoles.

First up we sampled the SNES version. This was a tough one to control and the shooting wasn’t great.

Tackling wasn’t too bad and the passing was fairly accurate but the shooting was where we were struggling and a lot of the goals came from the keeper spilling a save and the forward sliding the ball home.

The graphics were true 16Bit – really took me back and while the controls were different enough to keep us on our toes I managed an 8-0 victory 😀

Next up we tried the new Nintendo Wii version of PES 2009.

You use the stick on the controler to move your player, the nunchuck to direct where you want to pass and a shake of the controller to shoot. It’s all a little bit complex and there is a hell of a lot going on on screen.

I’m sure with more perseverance it would get easier and it was quite nice to have total control over the play. This one finished 1-1.

Then we headed over to the first PS2 version ‘Pro Evolution Soccer.’

This was more like it but first impressions were “whoa! How fast is this?!” I played a fair bit of this game and certainly don’t remember it being so quick.

The passing was very unresponsive, often not kicking the ball until a good second or two after you’d pressed the button.

We went for a Euro XI vs World XI which was a close game as both teams were so good – managed to squeeze a 1-0 victory and got the same result again in the next game; Germany vs Uruguay. Felt a bit bad as was the better @shandation team in the 2nd game by a mile but succombed to the German counter attack. 😆

Our final stop took us all the way back to the N64.

This was easily the worst of the versions we played – didn’t help that the graphics looked even worse than they should as it was on a big HD TV.

It was hard to tackle, hard to shoot and we had no idea how to change player.

Dribbling was easy and fun (a little too easy at times, although they may have been us jumping into challenges 😀 )

It turned into a bit of a goalfest and I ran out as the winner with a final score of 10-3 to round off the evening in style 😎

It was great fun to revisit the older versions of the game, especially as I no longer own any of them.

 

Playing the previous games in the series really made you appreciate just how good the latest PES title is, even with the faults it does have.

Hopefully football titles can continue to evolve and improve with each version. FIFA has made great strides to make up ground on PES.

I used to play FIFA from the first game in ’94 right through to 2001 when I discovered PES. It’s been PES all the way since then but I am looking forward to seeing what both titles bring to the table this year.

Could FIFA 2010 really tempt me away from PES? We’ll have to wait and see.

For now I’m basking in the warm glow of nostaglia and enjoying reminiscing about great times had hunched over a control pad playing Pro Evolution Soccer.

A New Challenger Has Entered!

Back in my early gaming days there was one arcade machine likely to get the kids crowded round it… Street Fighter II.

Quite simply we’d never seen anything like it – the animations, the colours, THE MOVES!

‘Holy crap he just threw a fireball!’

‘Check out this guy – he can pull off Zangief’s spinning piledriver.’

A fair amount of 20p’s – yes you young scamps it was only 20p in those days – were thrown into the machine practising moves and trying to get as far as possible.

You would watch others play – trying to see how they were pulling off certain moves, this was in the days before the internet so we couldn’t ‘google’ “Street Fighter II Moves” and see what came up.

Eventually with the boom of the home console market SF II made its way onto the SNES and later the Mega Drive/Genesis.

Coming out first on the SNES meant I didn’t have access to a copy – only at friends houses as I was a Sega man but one of my mates let me have his copy of a magazine which listed all the characters and moves for the game.

Man did I read that article over and over. We are talking hundreds of times – looking at the combos, thinking of the best way to lead this move into this move. It became an obsession and I loved playing the game at friends but the short sessions meant it was never a great deal of practice.

Eventually the game came to Mega Drive. I remember picking up my copy for £54.99 – I sometimes wonder how the hell they got away with charging that much for games, I suppose because people kept buying them 😀

This meant that you could get your mates round for fights or just practice on your own, as I often did, trying to perfect the Dragon Punch.

Each of the characters had their own storyline and we were all desperate to finish the game with each character to see all the endings. And it wasn’t as simple as chucking it on easy and playing through – oh no, we tried that. Beat the game on easy and all you got was this message:

“Thanks for completing the game on Easy now try it on Medium!” 😥

Can you imagine that these days? Wouldn’t happen I suspect but it spurred us on to get better and play through on the higher settings.

Of course all of this was secondary to getting back into the arcades – showing off your new found skills, pulling off dragon punches or perfectly timed sonic booms… and realising you’re not as good as you think when someone hands you your ass on a plate with a side order of hadoken.

Although frustrating getting beaten, especially so publicly often meant going back to the drawing board – possibly a change in character?

 

I know people who were resolute – they stuck with one character and tried to perfect their game with them.

I preferred to mix and match a few – Guile was undoubtedly my favourite character but I often switched to Ryu, Blanka or Chun Li if he wasn’t doing the business.

As time went on Street Fighter became something that was just played on the odd occasion, for old time’s sake if you like.

I never moved on to Street Fighter 3 but instead switched to the newly released Mortal Kombat. I played some Marvel vs. Capcom but couldn’t really get into it.

So when I heard talk of Street Fighter IV I was mildly interested but as information leaked my interest crept up.

“The graphics look great, they haven’t gone fully 3-D, the gameplay is brilliant, it’s just like the old days” is what seemed to scream out from every preview I read at the time.

And so I was really looking forward to getting my hands on the game and seeing if the hype was true and Capcom had pulled it off – first impressions are good but I’m going to give it some more attention and get a review up shortly.
